Hall Effect keyboards use magnets instead of a metal leaf. The switch does not need a physical contact to register a key. Software can set how far you press before the key fires, and rapid trigger can reset the key the instant you start to lift.
That is the whole trick. Marketing adds 8K polling and RGB. The useful part is adjustable actuation and rapid trigger.
Side by side
| Mechanical | Hall Effect | |
|---|---|---|
| How it fires | Physical contact | Magnet + sensor |
| Actuation | Fixed (unless analog HE) | Adjustable in software |
| Rapid trigger | No | Yes on gaming boards |
| Switch swaps | MX hot-swap on many boards | Often vendor-specific magnets |
| Feel | Linear, tactile, clicky | Mostly linear / very short tactiles |
| Best for | Typing, customizing, offices | FPS, osu, anyone who wants RT |
When Hall Effect is worth it
Consider a magnetic keyboard if you want adjustable actuation and rapid trigger for games, or different actuation settings for work and play. Keychron K2 HE and Q1 HE use Hall Effect sensors; EPOMAKER HE75 V2 TMR uses a different magnetic sensor technology. Features depend on the board’s firmware, not just the sensor name.
When mechanical is still better
Stay mechanical if you want tactile or clicky switches, silent office boards, or cheap MX hot-swap. A lubed Gateron in a gasket 75% is still the more pleasant typing keyboard for most people. HE boards also lock you into that brand’s magnetic switch more often than MX.
Rapid trigger, in one sentence
The key turns off as soon as you reverse direction, instead of waiting to pass a second fixed point. That is why it feels “faster” in Valorant. It does not add skill by itself.
